How to use this tool
Enter the adult measurements and the published equation's sex coefficient.
Set an activity multiplier appropriate to your scenario. The result estimates maintenance energy and does not prescribe weight loss.
Estimated maintenance energy = Mifflin–St Jeor resting estimate × entered activity multiplier
Worked example
2,308 kcal/day · estimated maintenance energy

Example inputs
- Adult age (years): 30
- Sex coefficient used by the published equation: Male coefficient
- Height (cm): 175
- Weight (kg): 70
- Activity multiplier: 1.4
Method illustration: A resting estimate of 1,648.75 with multiplier 1.4 gives 2,308.25 kcal/day.
Assumptions and limits
- For nonpregnant, nonlactating adults only. Not for children, acute illness, or an eating-disorder treatment plan.
- An equation estimates resting expenditure, not a measured metabolic rate. Body composition, hormones and activity affect actual needs. No weight-loss target is prescribed.
- Activity multiplier is your assumption, not a measured activity level. The initial 1.4 is illustrative. No calorie deficit or surplus is automatically recommended.
